In the case of the plates, they are igniting themselves and the ingenious use of gaskets to manage the flow of fluid across the plates within the heat exchanger. For those who like visuals, the process is described with great detail in the video that is rendered in 3D.
The principal idea to be understood is that the hotter fluid is inserted into the heat exchanger through a hole in the upper left side as well as out through an opening in the left lower. It is the opposite, as the cooler fluid is able to enter through the lower right , then goes out through the left side in the upper. The fluids are then moved through the heat exchanger and across opposing sides of the internal plates, assisted by pumps. This allows them to move in close proximity and exchange temperatures between plates with no mixing or contact. Plate heat exchangers can be used for any industry, not just the oil business.
